Suzuki Gixxer Long Term Review (44,000Km)

When the Suzuki launched its GS150R in November 2008 they entered in a very competitive market of 150cc segment which was dominated by the likes of Bajaj Pulsar, Yamaha FZ-s, Hero Hunk, CBZ, Honda Unicorn and some more. The bike was positioned as a sports commuter and had a very comfortable ergonomics for commuting and touring. The bike came with segment first Overdrive Sixth gear. The 150 cc engine made 13.4 PS of power and 13.4Nm of torque. The bike didn't do well because of poor sales network and marketing. Coming to the year 2014 Suzuki launches its predecessors Gixxer 155, and it wasn't just a GS150R in new skin, it was it an all new bike. The bike was develop from ground up and the design was heavily inspired by its MotoGP counterparts.
Suzuki Gixxer 155 Dual tone

Design:-
The Gixxer looks quite handsome with its bigger sibling inspired naked styling with those chiseled fuel tank. The front is sharp with a very intimidating styling. The best angle to look it is from the rear quarter, the bike looks big with those 140 section 17 inch rear tires. One of the best design highlight is the stubby exhaust with 2 exhaust pipes , exhaust note is very sporty and has a little bassy sound to it in the lower revs. The chiseled fiberglass fuel tank is very neatly designed and the knee recesses are very practical to hold on while cornering. We get a single piece handlebar with all the controls and the switchgear, quality is up to the mark but can be improved. The instrument cluster is one of the best we have seen in this class. It houses a clear LCD display with orange backlight. The speed display is big and clear to read so as the rev counter which occupies the top of the console. We have shift light, gear position indicator, a clock, digital fuel gauge at right hand side and two trip metre. The bike has bikini fairing and looks sexy in dual tone blue and white colour. The bike is offered in multiple colour options. . Overall the design is aggressive and demands attention.

Suzuki Gixxer 155 is a looker

Engine:-
Suzuki gixxer has an air cooled single cylinder 155cc engine. The engine is capable of producing 14.8 PS of power @ 8000 rpm and 14 Nm of torque @ 6000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5 speed constant mesh gearbox and the final drive is a chain unit. The engine is one of the most refined by the Japanese and is one of the most responsive in the 150 cc category. There's practically no vibration up until the red line and the engine revs very smoothly with linear power delivery. The bike returns a very good mileage of 38 to 45 km per litre in city and Highway respectively. The throttle response is very good and you can pull wheelies all day long.

Suzuki Gixxer makes your cornering that much fun and engaging. It handles like beauty.

Handling:-
Suzuki gixxer comes a equipped with MRF tyres which are grippy and provides the rider with lots of feedback. The Diamond frame is quite stiff and offers lots of confidence during cornering and off roading. The suspension is a bit on the stiffer side but smooths out the undulations of the road. The ground clearance is an issue with 160 mm of ground clearance, it's just not enough for indian roads and the main stand scrapes on very steep speed breakers. Breaking duty is taken care by 266mm disc at the front and a drum unit or an optional 130mm disc at the rear. The feedback and bite is good but lacks progression, the rear tends to lock under heavy braking on both disc and drum variant. Off roading is a fun on the gixxy, especially locking the rear wheel on the loose gravels is lots of fun. Suzuki gixxer is one of the best handling bike in this segment. The cornering ability is way much better than any other bike in the segment. The foot pegs are low and are very easy to scrap which is a limiting factors for the lean, but the bike is fun to ride in the canyons. The seat is low with 780 mm of length but the pillion seat is very high and is angled at the rear, so it is very difficult for the pillion to hold on while braking and the pillion slides forward. The seat is hard and not so comfortable for long distance, it can be solved by adding some extra layers of foam.

Cost of ownership:-
The cost of ownership for this particular 150 cc bike is in par with every other bike in this segment. The paid servicing from authorised service centre will cost upwards of 800 Rs. I use semi-synthetic engine oil for my bike and all genuine components by the manufacturer.

Cost of Fuel (taking 78rs/lit avg.) = 90,316 Rs/-

Cost of Engine Oil (using 1lit semi-synth 450 Rs) = 5,500 Rs/-
Cost of Spares (Chain sprocket set, steering cone set, air filter, oil filter, swingarm bush, fork oil )= 6,350 Rs/-
Cost of insurance (0-debt Insurance 2500 Rs/year ) = 7500 Rs/-
Cost of new tyres (Rear tyre changed 2 times and front once, currently CEAT on both tyres ) = 8,000 Rs/-

A perfect blend of everything in a 155cc bike. Suzuki did this one right.

Long distance Trip:-
I have traveled a lot and did some long distance journey on this sweet little bike. I have done Pune- Banglore ride around 900 km in 16 hours and Bangalore- Mangalore- Goa- Kolhapur- Pune around 1200 Km in 24 hours. The fuel efficiency I managed was around 30 km/lit, since I was riding continuously at 100 km/hr. I did Mumbai- Kutch- Mumbai around 2200 km trip and never had any trouble with the bike. The bike felt very stable on the highway and wasn't stressed at any given point of the time. The seat makes the butt numb on long journeys, so make sure to have breaks and stretch yourself periodically. For carrying luggage I used a hiking bag and bungee cords to secure them on the bike.
Suzuki Gixxer is a good tourer with its peppy little engine and comfortable ergonomics.

Final verdict.
The bike is very good and I am in totally love with the bike. Till now the bike has never failed me and the build quality is very solid. I would recommend this bike to a beginner a well as an experienced rider. Few problems here and there but nothing major. Planning to upgrade the suspensions with long travel for better ground clearance and off roading abilities and addition of a windscreen is must for long distance journey. The bike never fails to amaze me.
